Ordsam privacy

Ordsam is a vocabulary app for reading in another language. It keeps your dictionary on your iPhone and sends only what it needs to look words up, to sync if you sign in, and to handle Ordsam Plus.

On your iPhone

Your words, examples, language pairs, quiz history, milestones and settings are stored on your iPhone. They stay there until you delete them or the app.

Lookups and questions

When you look up a word or ask the tutor a question, the text you typed or said goes to Ordsam's server and on to xAI, which writes the translation, the example and the explanation. Ordsam does not keep that text on the server. The server sees your IP address while it answers, to limit how often one device can call it, and does not store it.

Quiz planning

When Ordsam plans your quizzes (Settings, Let Ordsam plan my quizzes, on unless you turn it off), the app sends Ordsam's server and xAI a short list of your saved words with their meanings and quiz results, the hours of the day you usually take quizzes, and your phone's local time. xAI's model uses them to choose when to quiz you and which words to ask. Nothing about who you are is sent, and Ordsam does not keep the list on the server. With planning off, nothing is sent and reminders come at the times you set.

Hands-free voice

While hands-free voice is on, sound from the microphone streams from your iPhone to xAI's voice service so it can hear the words you read and answer aloud. Voice stops when you turn it off or leave the Translate screen.

Accounts and sync

Signing in is optional. If you sign in with Apple or Google, Ordsam receives an account identifier from that service and, if you share it, your email address. Your words, language pairs, quiz history and settings are then copied to Ordsam's database so they appear on your other iPhones. Apple and Google sign-ins are separate accounts.

To delete your account, open Profile in the app and tap Delete account. That deletes the account and its copy in the cloud right away. If you signed in with Apple, Apple asks you to confirm, and Ordsam also ends Sign in with Apple for the app. The words on your iPhone stay until you delete them.

Ordsam Plus

Apple handles payment for Ordsam Plus; Ordsam never sees your payment details. RevenueCat keeps the record of your purchase so the app knows Plus is active. It is linked to a random identifier, or to your Ordsam account if you sign in. Free use is counted on your iPhone, not on a server.

What Ordsam does not do

• No advertising and no ad tracking.
• No selling or sharing of your data beyond the services named here, which process it only to provide their part of the app.
• No analytics about what you read or look up.

Services Ordsam uses

• Netlify runs Ordsam's server and database.
• xAI writes lookups, answers, voice replies and quiz plans.
• Apple and Google sign you in, if you choose to sign in.
• RevenueCat records Ordsam Plus purchases.
